How To Fix A Rivet On Jeans

Ahhhh…. the final post in our rather epic Ginger Sewalong serial! I worried at times that I've been guilty of information overload just I hope I've helped to demystify the jeans making procedure for y'all. Information technology'due south been fun, hasn't information technology? Making jeans is the all-time.

A few pieces of business before we proceed with the last step. Please be certain to upload your finished or progress pics to the Flickr page if you'd like to exist included in the giveaway, or utilise the hashtag #gingerjeans on Instagram. You lot can likewise e-mail me your blog posts or link to them in the comments. If you've been following along but are still unsure well-nigh this whole jeans making affair, y'all may want to wait into taking an intensive Ginger workshop with me at side by side autumn'south Army camp Workroom Social. It's going to be hella fun and I'm happy to lovingly hold your hand in person.

At present, on to the final stride which will take your jeans from "I fabricated these" to "I FRIGGING Fabricated THESE!" While you can use a regular push button for your jeans, and skip the rivets all together, nothing really pulls this project together like a hammer and some brute force. Here'southward what you lot'll demand:

  • Metallic rivets (get a few extra to exercise with)
  • A jeans push button (again, practice with an extra one first!)
  • A hammer
  • A nail to make holes, or an awl
  • A scrap piece of wood
  • A sheet of potent metal like steel or a cast fe frying pan – you demand something that won't dent when you hammer in your rivets
  • Wire cutters
  • Optional: a rivet printing

Check out my mail on sourcing supplies if you need aid finding rivets and buttons. As I said, it's improve when possible to get all metal buttons and rivets. Some buttons have hollow plastic bases which I just don't think are as strong over time. As for rivets, they generally come with a solid or hollow post. I prefer rivets with solid metal posts because they are easier to trim downwards to size. In the photograph beneath, the solid posts are in silver.

First upward is the button. I highly suggest yous practice on a scrap earlier going at your concluding jeans (hence why we are including an extra push button in the Ginger Jeans denim kits). Do up your zipper and use a pencil to marking the location of the button. I always place the button on the left side of the buttonhole like you lot see below. No sense in centering it unless yous want to give yourself a little breathing room at the waist.

You lot at present want to make a hole in the waistband where you lot marked the push button location. Y'all can utilise a hammer and boom, only I adopt using an awl.

Push the button dorsum through the hole y'all made.

Now, on your spare piece of wood, place the push button with the hole facing upwards, and turn your jeans over. Line up the button back post into the push hole. Endeavour to keep this equally straight every bit possible. With your hammer, give the push dorsum a few light thumps. Once it catches and you're certain it'southward going in direct, hammer information technology in until it's fully locked.

That wasn't too bad, was information technology?

On to the rivets! The location of your rivets is really upwardly to you just traditionally rivets are placed in v locations: along the topstitching where the front pocket meets the leg, the pinnacle corner of the money pocket and the outer courners of the back pockets. Use your awl or hammer and nail to make your holes. Y'all may need to use a petty strength – it can be catchy to brand a big plenty hole through numerous layers of fabric. I jerk the awl in and out on both ends to make enough space. Attempt to make the hole in between your topstitched lines so you lot're not severing that stitch.

Insert your rivet posts in the hole you lot just made. Take a wait at how much of the rivet is poking through – if it'south more than than a milimeter or two, you'll want to trim information technology down with wire cutters. If the postal service is as well long information technology will exist hard to hammer in straight, and it may also dent or break the surface of the rivet once it has been hammered in. If you don't  take wirecutters, you can also "pad" the difference past calculation a few layers of scrap denim to the rivet and trimming around the rivet postal service (see Tailor Taylor's post for how to practise that here). This is an example of what tin happen to a rivet that is too long for the denim.

For this pair of Gingers, I had to trim downward the rivet tip virtually i mm. I basically just cutting of the pointy tip with my wirecutters.

If y'all have hollow rivet posts, it is a little trickier to trim them since they take a trend to flatten when you employ wire cutters. Utilize pliers to squeeze them back into a rounder shape after you have trimmed them.

Once your mail is ready, put the rivet face down on your bandage fe pan or sheet of metallic. Turn your jeans over and align the post into the hole as directly as possible. You can use your fingers to hold the surrounding denim taut, which helps to keep the post direct. Give a few gentle taps to connect them, and once y'all are sure information technology is reasonably straight, hammer until it goes all the fashion in.

Repeat everywhere you desire to add rivets.
